What makes IFS unique?
Traditional talk therapy works mostly through talking, using verbal language, analysis, and insight to understand your history, your patterns, and where they came from. This can be deeply valuable. Internal Family Systems (IFS) shares that respect for your story, but works differently in a few important ways.
It connects the mind with the bodily component. We don’t only talk about your experience, we notice how you experience it — in sensation, tension, and impulse. This bridges a gap many people know well: you can understand a pattern in your mind, yet still feel stuck inside it.
It doesn’t pathologize. There is no diagnosis and no sense that something in you is broken or needs to be removed. Instead, IFS sees every part of you — even the anxious parts, the inner-critic, or avoidant parts — as having a positive intention, trying to protect you in the way it once learned to.
It’s deeply client-centered. Rather than the therapist interpreting your experience from the outside, IFS helps you turn toward your own parts with curiosity and compassion, and to listen to what they have to say.
At the heart of IFS is the Self — a calm, compassionate, curious core that exists in everyone. Healing happens not by fixing or fighting your parts, but by building a trusting relationship between your Self and them.
