What is Dance Movement Therapy (DMT)?
Dance Movement Therapy (DMT) is a form of creative arts therapy based on the understanding that the body and mind are deeply interconnected. Rather than viewing them as separate, DMT works from the perspective that our thoughts, emotions, physical sensations, and movement are all part of one integrated bodymind.
One of the most common responses to hearing about Dance Movement Therapy is, “I can’t dance,” or “I’m not a dancer.” This is completely understandable, as dance is often seen as a performance or an art form that requires skill or technique. In reality, Dance Movement Therapy does not require any dance experience or ability. There is no right or wrong way to move.
Movement is a universal human language. Long before we learn to speak, we communicate through movement, gesture, rhythm, and the body. Anthropologists have found that every culture throughout history has incorporated dance and movement into rituals, celebrations, healing, and community life. We are, in many ways, hard-wired for movement.
In a Dance Movement Therapy session, movement becomes a way of exploring your inner experience. Together, we pay attention to your body awareness, physical sensations, emotions, and nervous system, noticing what your body may be communicating beyond words. Sometimes movement simply helps you feel more grounded and present. At other times, it can reveal patterns, emotions, or ways of relating to yourself and others that may not yet be fully conscious.
Because trauma, stress, and difficult life experiences are often held in the body, Dance Movement Therapy offers a gentle way to reconnect with yourself through movement, curiosity, and compassion. The goal is not to perform or “dance well,” but to develop a deeper relationship with your body and expand your capacity for choice, expression, and emotional wellbeing.
Dance Movement Therapy may be helpful for people experiencing anxiety, trauma, depression, grief, chronic stress, emotional overwhelm, relationship difficulties, or a sense of disconnection from themselves. Sessions are always tailored to your individual needs and comfort level, and movement can be as subtle or expressive as feels right for you.
Dance Movement Therapy is offered in both individual and group settings. Whether working one-to-one or within a group, the therapeutic process creates a safe and supportive space to explore, heal, and reconnect with yourself through the wisdom of the body.
